Reference

The shelf behind
the lessons.

The Before You Buy lessons teach a decision. This is the reference behind them: the codes and permits you build under in Middle Tennessee, every standard and mark on a label, and the words on a bid, a spec sheet, and a warranty. Cited to the source, dated when we checked, and written the way the counter would say it.

Three Libraries

Codes, labels, and words.

The Lessons

Start with the decision, then look things up.

Twelve materials, three lessons each, and a whole-house spine for the builder who has to answer to the money. Every lesson links into this reference and this reference links back.

Frequently Asked

About the reference.

Where can I look up the building code for a house in Cheatham County, Tennessee?
Start with our codes and permits page. It names which office issues the permit (county outside city limits, town inside), which code edition each enforces, what energy values Tennessee actually requires in climate zone 4, and the inspection sequence. Every fact is cited to the agency's own page, with the date we checked it. The office that issues your permit is the final word.
What do the ratings and stamps on building materials mean?
Each one is a test or a certification with a body behind it: the NFRC label on a window, a UL fire class on a shingle, or the grade stamp on a stud and the ESR number on a structural screw. Our standards page lists every mark on the materials we sell, who issues it, what it certifies, where you find it on the product, and which Before You Buy lesson explains it.
Is this reference the same as the Before You Buy lessons?
No. The lessons teach a decision: what you are paying for, how to read the spec sheet, and what a material costs over time. The reference is the shelf behind them: the codes, the standards, and the words. The lessons link into it and it links back.
