The top of the catalog. No wood fiber, so the best moisture and stain resistance and the longest fade terms. Lightest weight. Often the choice for pool surrounds and full-sun decks.

What is the difference between composite and PVC decking?
Capped composite decking has a wood-fiber and polymer core wrapped in a polymer cap. Trex, TimberTech composite lines, and MoistureShield are common. Capped polymer (PVC) decking is 100 percent plastic with no wood fiber. TimberTech AZEK Vintage and Landmark are leading PVC lines. PVC is more moisture-resistant, lighter, and more stain-resistant, and it is the more expensive board. Composite has a slightly more wood-like feel underfoot. MoistureShield is also worth knowing about. Its Solid Core construction is the only composite rated for ground-contact, in-water, and continuous-moisture installs (boardwalks, dock surfaces, planters), where every other composite manufacturer voids the warranty. How long does composite decking last?
25 to 30 years is the typical service life under normal residential use, with most manufacturer warranties running 25 years (premium lines like Trex Transcend and TimberTech AZEK Vintage carry 30-year fade-and-stain warranties). Capped products resist fade and mold dramatically better than uncapped first-generation composites. Substructure (joists, beams, posts) is typically pressure-treated lumber that should be replaced or sister-reinforced after 20 to 30 years. Midway sells decking and pressure-treated substructure as one coordinated package.
What is the standard joist spacing for composite decking?
Composite decking typically requires 16-inch on-center joist spacing for boards running perpendicular to the joists, closer than the 24-inch spacing sometimes used with traditional wood decking. For diagonal board patterns, joists go to 12-inch on-center. Manufacturer span tables vary slightly; always check the specific product's installation guide. Midway provides span tables with deck-package quotes.
Are hidden fasteners better than face screwing?
Hidden fasteners (Cortex, Camo, Eb-Ty, CONCEALoc) attach decking from below or through the side groove, leaving no visible screw heads on the deck surface, a clean, premium look that's industry standard for capped composite installs. Face-screwing (driving screws straight down through the board into the joist) is faster, holds slightly stronger, and is acceptable on pressure-treated wood decks where appearance is secondary. Composite deck warranties often require hidden-fastener installation; check the product warranty before deciding. Midway stocks both fastener systems.
How hot does composite decking get in the sun?
Composite decking gets noticeably hotter than wood under direct sun. Surface temperatures can reach 130 to 160°F on dark colors in Tennessee summer. Capped polymer (PVC) products like TimberTech AZEK stay cooler than capped composite. Light colors, shade, and barefoot-friendly textures all help. Most pool surrounds and full-sun decks now spec capped polymer or lighter colors specifically for foot temperature. Midway can match the right product to the site's sun exposure.
What is the difference between treated and untreated lumber for decks?
Pressure-treated lumber is infused with copper-based preservatives that resist rot, fungal decay, and insect damage. Required by code for any deck framing within six inches of grade and for deck boards in ground contact. Untreated wood (cedar, redwood, ipe) relies on natural species durability and finish maintenance. Treated lumber is the standard for deck substructure (joists, beams, posts) regardless of decking surface.
