What is the difference between fiberglass, steel, and wood entry doors?
Fiberglass entry doors mimic wood appearance, won't rot or rust, and have the best paint and stain reliability over time, the contractor first-choice for most replacements today. Steel entry doors are strong, secure, and the value choice, common for builder-grade construction and rentals; can dent and may rust if scratched. Wood entry doors are the premium look, beautiful but require regular finish maintenance and protection from direct weather. Midway Supply carries Therma-Tru and Masonite across all three materials.
What is a pre-hung door?
A pre-hung door is a door slab already installed in its frame: hinges attached, latch hole bored, threshold installed (for exterior), weatherstripping in place. Pre-hung is the standard for new construction and most replacements: the carpenter removes the old jamb, sets the new pre-hung unit in the rough opening, shims plumb and square, and trims the casing. Slabs (just the door itself) are sold for replacements where the existing jamb stays in place. Midway sells both.
What thickness should an entry door be?
Standard residential entry doors are 1-3/4 inches thick, heavier, more secure, and more energy-efficient than the 1-3/8″ thickness used for interior doors. Some commercial applications use 2-1/4″. Slab-only replacements must match the existing thickness or the latches and lockset hardware won't fit. Pre-hung exterior units always come 1-3/4″. Midway stocks entry doors in 1-3/4″ thickness.
What is the standard size for an interior door?
Standard residential interior door slabs are 1-3/8 inches thick. Common widths are 28″, 30″, 32″, and 36″ in 80″ height. ADA-accessible openings require 36″ doors. Pre-hung interior doors come with the jamb and casing; slab doors are sold for replacements. Hollow-core doors are most affordable; solid-core doors block sound better and feel more substantial. Midway carries pre-hung and slab interior doors from Masonite, Woodgrain, and other lines.
What is a barn door track system?
A barn door track system is hardware that lets a slab door slide along a horizontal track mounted above the opening. The door rolls on hangers that ride the track, with a floor guide preventing swing. Barn doors are non-rabbeted (no jamb stop), so they don't fully seal, best for openings where sound and light blocking aren't critical (closets, pantries, transitional spaces). Hardware kits include track, hangers, stops, and guides. Midway carries barn door hardware kits and slabs sized for them.
How energy-efficient are entry doors?
Entry door energy performance is measured by U-factor (lower is better). Energy Star doors typically have U-factors of 0.20 to 0.30 for residential. Modern fiberglass and steel doors with foam cores have R-values of R-5 to R-7, far better than the R-0.5 of an old solid wood door. Air sealing at the threshold and weatherstripping is as important as the door material itself. Midway-spec doors ship with energy-rated thresholds and weatherstripping.
