MDF (medium-density fiberboard) is engineered wood made from compressed wood fibers and resin, perfectly smooth, stable, and ideal for paint-grade trim. It's heavier than pine, requires sealed cuts to prevent moisture damage, and shouldn't be used in bathrooms or exterior applications. Finger-joint pine is solid pine with short pieces glued end-to-end, paintable, slightly less smooth than MDF, but lighter and more moisture-tolerant. Both are paint-grade only; for stained finishes, use solid pine or hardwood. Midway Supply carries MDF moulding from Metrie and finger-joint pine from regional mills.

Crown moulding is decorative trim installed at the joint between wall and ceiling, running at an angle (typically 38° or 45°) to the wall. Sizes range from 2-1/4″ (small profile) up to 7-1/4″ or larger (architectural). The proper crown size scales with ceiling height: 8-foot ceilings look right with 3 to 4-1/2″ crown; 9-foot ceilings with 4-1/2 to 6″; 10-foot+ ceilings with 6″ or larger. Multi-piece crown assemblies build crown profiles taller than any single moulding. Midway stocks crown profiles in MDF, pine, and hardwood.

Paint-grade trim (MDF, finger-joint pine) is designed for opaque paint finish. Joints, knots, and grain irregularities are filled and smoothed before installation. Stain-grade trim (clear pine, oak, poplar, maple, walnut) is solid wood with consistent grain that takes stain or clear finish, more expensive, but the natural wood character is the point. Mixing paint-grade and stain-grade in the same room rarely looks intentional; pick one strategy per space. Midway stocks both grades.

Cellular PVC is rigid foamed-PVC trim: Azek, Boral TruExterior, and Versatex are common brands. Won't rot, warp, or absorb water; paintable; dimensionally stable in Tennessee humidity. Used for exterior trim around windows, doors, fascia, soffit, columns, and any wood-trim location exposed to weather. It costs more per foot than wood trim and takes the rot repair and most of the repaint off the calendar. Midway carries Azek, Boral, and Versatex in trim board, sheets, and column wraps.

Standard door and window casing is 2-1/4″ wide for traditional residential, sometimes 2-1/2″ or 3-1/2″ for craftsman or transitional styles. Custom homes increasingly use 3-1/2″ to 5-1/2″ wide casing for a heavier, more architectural look. Casing thickness is typically 11/16″ to 3/4″. Inside corners are mitered at 45°; outside corners are sometimes mitered, sometimes butt-joint with a corner block. Midway stocks casing in colonial, ranch, craftsman, and contemporary profiles.

Yes. Custom mill match is the way to replicate historic or architectural profiles that aren't in modern catalogs. Bring a 12-inch sample stick (or a knife profile if available), and the moulding mill grinds custom knives to match. Lead times typically run 2 to 4 weeks; minimum order quantities apply (often 200 to 500 linear feet). Custom-mill matching is essential for additions to historic homes, period-correct restorations, and custom architectural details. Midway coordinates custom mill orders through specialty suppliers.
