What is the difference between woven wire and barbed wire fence?
Woven wire fence (sometimes called "field fence") has horizontal and vertical wires woven into a grid, used to keep livestock in (cattle, horses, sheep, goats) and predators out. Common spacing is 12-1/2-gauge with various stay-spacing. Barbed wire is twisted strand wire with sharp barbs at intervals, used as a top strand on woven wire fence to deter jumping, or as standalone three- or four-strand fence for cattle in open pasture. Most working farms use woven wire fence at the perimeter and barbed wire along property lines. Red Brand and Stay-Tuff are common brands at Midway Supply.
How deep should fence posts be set?
For typical residential and farm fence posts, set the post hole at least 1/3 the total post height. A 6-foot above-ground fence post needs to be 2 feet below grade (8-foot total post). Frost-line concerns add depth: most of Tennessee has a 6 to 18-inch frost line. Corner and gate posts go deeper than line posts because they bear lateral load, typically 3 to 4 feet for an 8-foot corner post. Concrete or tamped gravel sets posts; treated wood is required below grade. Midway carries treated posts and concrete mix.
What is cattle panel?
Cattle panel is a rigid welded-wire fence panel, typically 16 feet long and 50 inches tall, with 6-inch by 8-inch openings. Each panel weighs about 35 to 50 pounds and uses 4-gauge galvanized steel wire welded at every intersection. Stronger and more chew-resistant than woven wire fence, fast to install (one panel covers 16 linear feet), and reusable. Common applications include cattle pens, hog pens, garden trellis, and temporary livestock confinement. Red Brand and OK Brand are stocked at Midway.
How long does pressure-treated wood last in the ground?
No treater we sell publishes a life in years. What they publish is a rating and a warranty. The AWPA puts fence posts in Ground Contact General Use (UC4A) and building poles in Ground Contact Heavy Duty (UC4B), and the Wolmanized warranty on the treated lumber Midway carries covers termites and fungal decay for as long as the original owner holds the property, on the condition that barn posts are Heavy Duty and no cut end goes in the ground. Modern preservatives (MCA, copper azole) need hot-dip galvanized or stainless fasteners, which the building code requires for treated wood. What is the standard spacing for fence posts?
Standard line-post spacing is 8 to 12 feet on-center for residential and farm wood-post fence. Closer spacing (8 feet) is used for taller fence, woven wire under tension, or windy locations. Wider spacing (12 to 16 feet) is acceptable for low-tension barbed wire or panel fence. Corner and gate posts always need bracing (H-brace or angle-brace assemblies) to resist the lateral pull of the fence wire. Midway provides spacing guidance with fence-package quotes.
What metal roofing does Midway carry for pole barns?
Midway Supply supplies metal roofing and siding panels for pole barns and outbuildings through GingCo Supply, a metal-panel manufacturer in Burkesville, Kentucky. The barn panel is GingCo's Tuff Rib through-fastened profile in 29 or 26 gauge with 36-inch coverage, with PBR-Panel in 26 gauge for heavier-duty buildings. Panels come rolled to the job's lengths in more than 20 colors, with matching trim, closures, and fasteners quoted as one package alongside the treated posts, girts, purlins, and trusses. Midway keeps a limited quantity of common panels and trim on hand; most barn packages are quoted to order with the lead time confirmed on the quote.
What is the difference between a tube gate and a panel gate?
A tube gate is welded from steel tubing, light, strong, and rust-resistant when galvanized. Standard widths are 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 feet. Used for driveway entries, pasture gates, and corral access. A panel gate is welded from steel rod or wire similar to cattle panel, wider mesh, used inside pastures and cattle pens for the gate to match the fence visual. Tube gates are stronger and more weather-resistant; panel gates blend with woven-wire fence. Behlen Country and Tarter are stocked brands at Midway.
